Introduction
It all started while I was sitting on the couch and I noticed that my kids, as usual, were glued to an electronic device, playing video games, or just being zombies in front of the TV. I realized that I was tired of spending our weekends indoors and wasting precious time that we could be spending together doing something useful. I decided to break this cycle and create a legacy of adventure and exploration for my family. In this blog post, I want to share my journey of how I transformed us from couch potatoes to outdoor adventurers and world travelers. I want to show you how to do the same.
Right now our kids need us to be leaders more than ever. I am a firm believer in embracing the struggle and once we reach one destination.... we need to start working for the next one. The process and the struggle is where the rewards are....not in the destination.
Discovering the Call of the Wild
It all started with a realization - this was not the legacy that I wanted for me or my family. I wanted to learn outdoor and travel skills that I could share with my wife and two kids. I wanted them to learn the skills needed to be able to handle themselves outdoors and travel overseas with confidence. We were spending too much time in front of screens and not enough time connecting with each other. So, I made a conscious decision to change that.
I started simply by researching local trails, parks, and camping spots. I wanted to find places that were accessible and suitable for families, with amenities and activities that would appeal to everyone. It was important to choose destinations that offered a range of experiences, from easy hikes to thrilling adventures. Our first campout was in the backyard and everyone loved the experience.
Building Confidence and Skills
One of the biggest challenges I faced was building the confidence and skills needed to venture into the wilderness and to travel overseas with my family. I knew that if I wanted to inspire them, I had to lead by example. I had to get off of the couch and build some skills.
I started by doing research on YouTube, conducting Google searches, and reading tons of articles. As I learned new skills, I would practice them until I was proficient. Then I would share these skills with the family. I started out with simple basic skills and then moved on to more advanced skills. As I learned, I became more confident and our adventures expanded.
Getting the Family on Board
Getting my family excited about outdoor adventures was the next step. I knew that I had to make it fun and engaging for them to truly embrace the idea.
I started by organizing weekend hikes to nearby nature reserves. I made sure to choose trails that were suitable for our young family and made sure it was fun. We would pack a picnic, bring along binoculars for looking at various animals including birds and alligators. We would even play outdoor games along the way as they went on side adventures. These small, enjoyable experiences gradually built up their enthusiasm for outdoor activities.
Overcoming Challenges
Of course, our journey was not without challenges. There were times when the weather was unfavorable, or the kids were resistant to leaving the comfort of home. But I learned to be flexible and adaptable. By having the right gear and a positive attitude, we overcame these obstacles.
On rainy days, we would explore indoor climbing walls or visit museums with interactive exhibits. And when the kids were hesitant, I would involve them in the planning process. I let them choose the destination or activity, which gave them a sense of ownership and made them more willing to participate.
Creating Lasting Memories
As we embarked on more outdoor adventures, I realized that I was not only creating lasting memories for my family but also instilling in them a love for nature and a sense of adventure. They were also building skills that would help them throughout their lives. Confidence was one of the major benefits. They started to realize that they could accomplish anything with the right training, skills, gear, and preparation.
We started ticking off bucket list items, like camping under the stars, kayaking on the open ocean, and traveling overseas. Each new experience and adventure brought us closer as a family and gave us stories to share for years to come.
Inspiring Other Dads
Seeing the positive impact it had on my own family, I felt compelled to share my journey and help other dads gain the confidence to get their families outdoors. This is the reason I decided to start writing this blog.
